In total, the terminal will expand by 103,000 square meters and the total area of the terminal in the early 2020s will be more than 250,000 square meters. The expansion of the entire long-haul flight area has been planned by PES-Arkkitehdit. Lemminkäinen is responsible for the construction of the terminal and Destia for the construction of the airport level. The HVAC is designed by Granlund and the plumbing contractor is Consti.

In the expansion project, a large central square, or Plaza, is to be built between the south and west wings and will form the heart of the entire expansion. The central square is expected to become an architecturally impressive space. Its rugged, Finnish wood-clad wall and ceiling structures will provide an impressive setting for a variety of events and features.

The square is surrounded by the security screening of transit passengers, numerous shops and restaurants and experiential services. The plaza will have 25,000 square meters of new passenger and luggage space and will mainly be used by millions of transit passengers and travellers to non-Schengen countries. The square will be opened in the beginning of 2019.

Stravent Oy delivers 20 Biddle IndAC2 air curtains to Finavia Plaza’s luggage centre and 3 Biddle SR air curtains (free-hanging) to passenger entrance tambours. The installation will start in early summer 2018.
